Then I read two of the essays online (Seduce the Whole World by Carla Blumenkranz via the New Yorker, a piece I have already discussed at length, andHow Much My Novel Cost Me by Emily Gould via Medium [titled Into the Woods in the collection] ) and I thought both pieces were provocative and mesmerizing as HECK AND HELL which made me want to read the book. On the release date I went into the bookstore expecting to spend hardcover money and then I found out that it was released JUST IN PAPERBACK, so I was already in a good mood going in, and then I was in a REALLY good once I realized how passionate and thoughtful and gossipy and prickly and deeply human this book was. So without further ado, the grades! Fair warning, I gave a lot of As. What can I say? They were earned! MFA vs NYC by Chad Harbach This was the piece (originally pubbed in n+1) that inspired the collection. Its good, it lays things out, points for inspiring a great book of essays, but it didnt change my life. B. A Mini-Manifesto by George Saunders George muses about MFA programs in numbered beats, and makes salient and witty points, he gets an A, but real talk, how was George Saunders not going to get an A, he bleeds A, my fingers probably wouldnt even physically let me type the letter B at the end of this sentence. A Basket Weaving 101 by Maria Adelmann Adelmann talks about her journey from living in New York out of college to getting an MFA in The Boonies (Charlottesville,VA, whatever), its a solid personal essay and the pie charts that demonstrate the economics of NYC vs The Boonies are supes interesting. B The Pyramid Scheme by Eric Bennett This is kind of about the CIAs role in the evolution of the American MFA writing program and kind of about the authors experience as an Iowa MFA, and both parts were solid enough, but they just didnt marry for me in the way I wanted them to wed. B- The Fictional Future by David Foster Wallace DFW waxes awesome about MFA programs a year after he graduates, its vintage DFW, of course he gets an A, he earned it, dude,  Im not going to give DFW a B just to be a dick, Im not that kind of schoolmarm. A. My Parade by Alexander Chee Author Alexander Chee has his reservations about getting his Iowa MFA, he is Korean and queer in AIDS crisis-era San Francisco (and later NYC), and worries he wont be able to find his place in the MFA culture, and then he does and its gorgeousity, a word Im pretty sure my dad made up, but nevertheless applies to this essay. A. How to be Popular by Melissa Flashman Agent Melissa Flashman talks about her history of predicting trends and how its kind of possible but mostly impossible. A fast, fun, smart read. A-. Into the Woods by Emily Gould Remember the last time someone got a big, fancy book advance and you were like Grumble grumble lifes not fair grumble grumble grumble grumble? This is the dark side of that moon, the unhappy epilogue to that fairytale ending and its a painful and phenomenal piece of writing. Also Goulds boyfriend Keith Gessen figures prominently into this piece, and he has two other essays in this collection, and he runs n+1 and I dont know dudes, thats all the gossip I got. A+ The Disappointment Business by Jim Rutman A clear-eyed look at how and why manuscripts are accepted for representation/publication. Theres a pry-your-eyes-open-in-the-most-painful-way-possible section where Rutman (an agent) goes through a litany on manuscripts hes actively considering and wraps up by saying hes probably going to agree to rep NONE of them. Also, behind the scenes on the sale of Alissa Nuttings Tampa, for anyone who cares about that (I did). A. People Wear Khakis by Lorin Stein With Astri von Arbin Ahlander The editor of The Paris Review is interviewed for the website Days of Yore and everything goes as awesomely as planned. A. Nine Lives by Jynne Martin You know how people say they want to be best friends with Tina Fey/Mindy Kaling after reading their memoirs? I want to be tight with Jynne Martin after reading this essay. She seems like the raddest girl around and an ace publicist. I loved her publishing worldview and marketing insights and was super into the story about how she and her team rescued Curtis Sittenfelds Prep from obscurity with a good game plan. RIGHT? Right. A+ Money (2006) This is Keith Gessens first of two essays in the collection, a general piece about a modern writers relationship with money, its fine, its good, his second piece is much better. B Money (2014) This is the much better piece about Gessen, having blown through his book advance and in need of cash stat, taking up a teaching position at a local college teaching creative writing to undergrads. What I LOVED about this is how inadequate Gessen feels as a teacher, I cant take another inspirational teacher story, but Im all kinds of down for struggling teacher stories. A+ (I realize I gave both Gould and Gessens pieces A+s) ( I swear to God they earned them) (I promise its not just because theyre the homecoming queen and prom king of this essay collection) (I never thought I would ever type that sentence) (I probably wont ever type that sentence ever again) Seduce the Whole World by Carla Blumenkranz We already know what I thought about this essay, I hate the events as they occurred, but difficult people and situations make for, if not A+ writing, then at least solid A writing. A. Application by Diana Wagman Wagman is the new creative writing teacher on campus and all her colleagues make her feel like shit, we all know how much I love the Struggling Creative Writing Teacher sub genre of this essay collection. A. The Invisible Vocation by Elif Bautman In a collection of personal essays, this academic piece felt dry as the SAHARA DESERT. Actually, I just looked up what the driest desert in the world is, and its the Atacama, and this came pretty close to Atacama-dry. I consider this more an editing problem than a writing problem, this is a piece in the wrong context. So Chad Harbach is getting this C as much, if not more than Bautman. C. Dirty Little Secret by Frederic Jameson This isnt Sahara or Atacama dry, but its, like, anywhere in Arizona dry. Again, this is a context problem. Also, why shove all your academic pieces in at the end? One last chance for pretentious points? Chill out, MFA vs NYC, I liked you better when you werent trying so hard. B- Reality Publishing by Darryl Lorenzo Wellington How the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award resembles reality TV. Solid. B. A Partial List of Books Ive Written by Eli S. Cultural Identity And My Family - 766 Words

Cultural identity is defined as the sense or feeling of belonging to a group. I connect my cultural identity to my immediate family. My immediate family consists of my parents, two younger sisters, and myself. Each one of us has significant values that have been instilled in one another. I believe that they play a large role in making me who I am today. Coming from a large, Sicilian family, the importance of love, loyalty, and support has always been prominent. My Sicilian culture has always been existent in my life, however I do not fully connect with it on many levels. For example, tattoos are not very accepted by my extended family. My father, mother, and I have several visible tattoos. When my grandparents and a few other family members noticed, they were immediately disgusted. They could not see that we were the same people we were before they noticed the tattoos. They also become distant for some time. The tattoos are a form of expression for us and we see them as a rt. My parents have always taught my sisters and me to never be ashamed of who we are. I value this deeply. I feel that just because other people are unable to see how special one person is, does not mean that that person is not special. In addition, this taught me to not judge someone based solely on their appearance. Some of the nicest people I have ever met are covered with tattoos. In 1865 the United States passed the thirteenth amendment of the constitution, which formally abolished the practice of slavery in the United States. Over a century has gone by since this day, and yet somewhere behind the mask of freedom that our country holds with such pride lingers a hidden trade. This is the trade of modern day slavery that remains prevalent in our country. Despite the freedoms we are granted as a citizen of the United States, human trafficking is a massive issue that is often overlooked. The United States is ranked among the top five countries where human slaves are sold and exploited for labor or sexual purposes (Mizus, Moody, Privado, Douglas, 2003). Human trafficking is a crime and an abuse of human rights that†¦show more content†¦This paper will also look at different sociological theories and how the theories explain the issues that will be addressed in this research paper. The three theories that will be used are structural functionalism, interac tionism theory, and strain theory. S. ) consulting company, namely Development Alternatives, Inc. for the impl ementation of the Kenya Wildlife Serrvices Conservation of Biodiverse Resource Areas Project (COBRA) for a maximum investment by USAID of US$7,000,000.The amount has since been raised to US$8,500,000 and the time frame of the project has also been extended up to December, 1999. The goal of the COBRA project is to promote Socio-economic development through conservation and sustainable management of Kenyas natural resources. The main objective is to increase the flow of socio-economic benefits to local communities living adjacent to Kenyas National Parks and Reserves through the sustainable management of wildlife and other natural resources.This project has assisted in enhancing community awareness in conservation and wildlife management. The Conservation of Biodiverse Resource Areas Project (COBRA) has assisted the Kenya Wildlife Service in institutionalising a community based conservation component namely the Partnership Department, within the Organisation through the provision of s alary support to professional staff, training of lower cadres and procurement of vehicles, computers, and the necessary field equipment.The COBRA project has also assisted in the implementation of pilot community conservation programmes in three focal Districts; namely Laikipia, Samburu and Kajiado since 1993 as well as the coastal areas South of Mombasa. Although the COBRA project has assisted communities in the planning and implementation of community based development projects such as the construction of schools, clinics, water tanks among others, the projects main thrust since 1995 has been focused on the support of enterprises related to eco-tourism, which depend directly on wildlife.ALTERNATIVE FUNDING: PRIVATE ENTREPRENEURSHIP/ PARTNERSHIP APPROACH A CASE STUDY: LEWA DOWNS CONSERVANCY/ IL NGWESI The Lewa Downs Conservancy was formed to manage 55,000 acres of prime wildlife land for the purpose of protecting such endangered species as black Rhino and grevy Zebra, to establish Wildlife as a viable form of land use as well as to encourage the neighbouring land owners maintain wildlife migration routes. The conservancy has emphasized community involvement by the neighbouring land-owners.The projects include:- the development and operation of a health clinic, the establishment of community trust aimed at improving the standards of living of those juxtaposing the conservancy and assisting with the support of two community based wildlife trusts whose prime objectives are to use wildlife as a resource to generate money for people in neighbouring communities. A unique relationship was created between the Lewa Downs Conservancy and the IL NGWESI TOURIST LODGE, an income generating project, with a view to forming an ideal eco-tourism system.The IL Ngwesi Tourist Lodge which is located on Il Ngwesi Group Ranch (in North Eastern Laikipia) was built with Donor funding for the benefit of both visitors to Lewa Downs Conservancy and Borana ranch. The lodge has four ban das of unique architecture which are situated on an ideal site that overlooks the Mukogodo Escarpment and forest to the south and southwest and the picturesque hills of Wamba, Samburu Game Reserve, Mathews range and Sapashe to the North west. Natural materials have been used to construct the Bandas in order to blend with the environment thus making it an attractive eco-lodge.Construction of the lodge started in January 1996 and opened its doors to tourists on 19th December 1996. As of November 1997, it had grossed US$ 42,000 against an investment of US$ 140,000. The initial funding came from the Kenya Wildlife Service; and from Liz Clairborne and Art Ortenbury Foundations of U. S. A. The marketing and promotion of the lodge has been by word of mouth, but nevertheless the lodge has attracted a very enthusiastic clientele of expatriates living in Nairobi who are out to seek quietude and adventure in the in the African bush.To diversify activities, a cultural boma has been opened and i s visited by tourists from the lodge, Borana Ranch and the Lewa conservancy. Proceeds from the lodge are re-invested in community based development projects such as schools, cattle dips, water, bursary schemes and the group ranch members share dividends at the end of each year. The community formed a land management committee that limits the land to be set a side for cattle ranching.The losses incurred as a result of limited land for ranching are offset by revenues generating from the operations of the lodge and annual dividends. The Kenya Wildlife Service sensitizes and mobilizes the community through Participatory Rural Appraisals (PRAs), workshops, study tours and training of committee members on leadership and record keeping, as well as training scouts from the community. A general meeting is held each year to discuss the utilisation of funds realised from the bandas. Nearly all employees of the Il Ngwesi Bandas are members of the community.The Bandas thus have shown that the co mmunity based wildlife conservation projects can raise income and has also demonstrated the utility of the local natural resources. The enterprise has positively changed the attitude of the group ranch members towards wildlife conservation. This is a typical success story of an eco-tourism enterprise that has created direct linkages between conservation of the community land and tourism related wildlife projects by providing a focus for the community to preserve the environment and the rationale to do it.The tripartite co-operation between Lewa Downs conservancy, the community and the Kenya Wildlife Service partnership programme has created a model worth emulating in the development of sustainable tourism and distribution of benefits, especially in communities based in remote areas of Kenya. It is made of different combinations of 20 different amino acids. Protein is found in every cell, tissue, and organ of the body. It is important to consume an adequate amount of protein because our bodies are constantly using the protein we digest to make more amino acids. Some amino acids cannot be produced by the body and it is essential that our diet contain them. There are different types of protein and they are labeled according to the amount and type of amino acids they contain. The first is known as a complete protein source. Complete protein sources contain all of the essential amino acids. They are also known as high quality proteins. The other is known as an incomplete protein source. This is a protein source that lacks one or more of the essential amino acids. Proteins can be consumed in conjunction in order to make up all of the essential amino acids. This is called complementary proteins. (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, n. d. ). Finding the proper balance of protein is extremely important for overall health. Eating a diet high in protein poses many health risks. The risk factor for heart disease and cancer is increased when a diet contains too much protein. Animal proteins contain a higher fat content which leads to higher cholesterol which plays a large role in heart disease. Research shows that people who consume a high amount of protein tend to have a higher IGF-1 blood levels which contributes to certain types of cancer. High protein diets often lack calcium intake which requires pulling the existing calcium from the bones. This can result in brittle bones. Another downfall of a high protein diet is the strain that the kidneys must endure to process the excess protein in the body. Organ failure may also occur due to the reduced amount of energy due to low carbohydrate intake. The body is then required to burn the protein from body organs to make energy. High protein diets are often deficient in many vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients because of the lack of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It is unusual for someone to lack the proper amount of protein in their diet; however, overconsumption can prove to be dangerous. (5 Negative High Protein Diet Effects, n. d. ). As a 36 year old woman, I must do whatever it takes to protect my bones, my body and my overall health. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a woman between the ages of 19 and 70 should consume 46 grams of protein per day. After reading examples of how to reach this amount, I am sure that I am consuming enough protein each day. There are many healthy sources of protein that contain all of the essential amino acids. These high quality protein sources include meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, and cheese. In the past I have tried high protein/low carb diets (i. e. Atkins Diet) and have been successful at losing weight. I have also experienced some of the ill effects that these diets can cause. After this class and actually understanding what fad diets do to the body, I do not think I will ever try a fad diet again. Family in the twenty-first century is different to everyone; all families have different structures and functions, beliefs and parental attitudes. The term family refers to a unit consisting of people who are related to each other either biologically by notions of blood relations, or alternatively by legal means such as by marriage (Kirby, et al 2000, p45). The definition of a family has changed a lot over the years; there are several reasons for the definition to change. The view of the typical nuclear family is no longer the norm within society. Nowadays there are more families of divorce, stepfamilies, and extended families, rich and poor families. There is not a single definition for what a family is; people have their own view of what a family is. There are many factors that make families different, such as ethnicity, religion, and economics. Levine (N.D) suggests that families have three basic goals for the children; survival, economic self-sufficiency and self-actualization (Enrique, et al, 2007) Family structure and family functioning can affect a childs development in many ways. Family structure is the way in which a family is set up, for example, single parent families, extended families and nuclear families. Family functioning refers to how family members are emotionally attached, how well they communicate emotions and information and respond to problems (Freistadt and Stohschein. 2012). Everyone has a different view of what family is and how families should be structured. Some make the assumption that children can only be brought up successfully in a two-parent family structure involving a heterosexual relationship. Others take the perspective that children can function well in any family structure, provided certain basic conditions are met (Wise, 2003). According to Schaffer family structure plays less importance part in a childs development than family functioning. The family is a social system endorsed by law and custom to take care of its members needs (Kepner, 1983). The emotional bondings and relationships between the members of the family, and their responsibility to the family unit hold them together through the changes of transitions and the complicated connections. Family Systems Theory Murray Bowen developed the family systems theory, he recognised that the family was an emotional unit and any changes to the family functioning would influence all members of the family. The family as a system links all individuals together and understands that things going on in the environment can influence all individuals even if not all of them are actively engaged, for example parents workplace. There are four main principles of the family systems theory; wholeness, integrity of subsystems, circularity of influence and stability and change. Wholeness refers the family as one unit however each member of the family have certain attributes of their own. Integrity of subsystems means that each relationship is a subsystem, for example; mother and father relationship or mother and child relationship or vice versa. Relationships between relationships are also subsystems. Circularity of influences means that the subsystems and relationships depend on each other and if there is a change in one subsystem it has an impact on other systems. Stability and change refers to external influences that can affect the individual or subsystems, for example parents workplace. The wellbeing of the child, therefore, can be conceived of as dependent upon the functioning of elements of the entire family system (McKeown and Sweeny 2001: 6) Family systems are different in all families. Parental attitudes are important in setting up an environment in which their child can flourish. Campion (1985) says that if a child grows up in a stable and loving environment, the child will usually develop a sense of self-respect and self-discipline. The child understands what is expected of him and However it can be argued that a child who has been brought up in a family system where the parents attitudes lack maturity, the child is more likely not to flourish in the environment and not understand what is expected of them, therefore cannot develop a sense of their own competence. Campion (1985) suggests that children take on the roles, which have a function in their family system. It is believed that if children see themselves as the disobedient one in the family setting, they may carry out their difficult behaviours in school. Likewise a child who is obedient may also carry out this behavior at school. The ecological systems theory Bronfenbrenners ecological systems theory states that the environment is reflected in an individuals development. Bronfenbrenners ecological approach refers to layers of environmental influences that impact an individuals development. The interactions with people and the environment are key to development. This theory can apply to individuals at any stage of development. The theory identifies five environmental systems in which the individual interacts with; microsystem, meosystem, exosystem, macrosystem and chronosystem. The microsystem refers to each setting, which the individual is an active participant, such as; family, school, community, friends. This layer has the most immediate and earliest influences on the child. The relationships in the microsystem can be bi-directional; this means that the childs behaviours can be influenced by the family and vice versa. The meosystem refers to the relationships between the settings in the microsystem and the individual; an example of this would be the relationship between home and school. The exosystem refers to a setting or setting where an event happens, which affects or is affected by what happens in the setting that the developing person is in. The child is not an active participant in this system. The structures in the exosystem can affect a childs development by interacting with the structures in the microsystem, for example; mothers work place can affect the amount of time the mother spends with the child. Although the child is not directly involved with the structures in the exosystem, they do feel the positive and negative impacts that are involved with the interaction between the systems. The Macrosystem refers to the wider social systems, for example; government legislations and economic factors. These things affect the child indirectly however it has an impact on the developing childs life. An example of this could be that the childs family is living in poverty therefore this can cause social exclusion and the child might not have access to school trips or community play areas. The chronosystem refers to how things change over time as it relates to the childs environment. There are various elements within this system that can be internal or external. An internal influence could be the physiological changes that occur while the child gets older. An external influence could the timing of their parents getting a divorce. America in Black and White

Langston Hughes was an important and defining figure of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920’s up to the 1930’s, a decade of great activity in the African-American arts scene. Hughes was known for the rhythm, jazz and blues, of his poetry. The theme of his poetry is mostly on the life experiences of the African-American. In his Theme for English B, Hughes expresses the reality in the disparity – of being Black among Whites. In the first stanza, the professor’s assignment was specific and defined which was to write a page about oneself. It was a deviation from the usual rigid English lessons, like classical poems.Writing about oneself was more loose and relaxed. Hughes used iambic quatrain to taunt the rigidity of the instruction. Hughes made it known from the beginning that student and professor were different. The student thought the assignment over, and wondered if it was easy writing about oneself. Hughes used the free-verse style on rest of the poem to c ontrast the earlier quatrain. Alliteration and Assonance in Line 7, â€Å"I am twenty-two, colored, born in Winston-Salem† had the jazz sounds of Harlem. Here, Hughes bared that the student was Black and therefore the professor was White.When he combined two vowel sounds in Line 10, â€Å"I am the only colored student in my class† Hughes indicated how strongly the student felt about being Black. Hughes used metaphors to denote Black with Harlem, 8th Avenue, 7th Street and Harlem Branch Y, places where there was heavy African-American population. There was a noticeable change in the order of the [I] from Lines 6, 7, 8 and 10, such as, â€Å"I wonder†¦ / I am twenty-two †¦ / I went to school there †¦ / I am the only †¦Ã¢â‚¬  to Lines 12-14 â€Å"†¦ then I cross †¦/ †¦ and I come †¦ / †¦ where I come †¦ /. † The [I] used to start off the lines, they now end off the lines.Such reversal was a symbolical of the place the Black took in society. The symbolism of coming from African-American places going upwards to the school on the hill and taking the elevator to his room at the Y told of the student’s efforts to reach the level of the Whites. It must be recalled in Line 6 that the student had doubts â€Å"I wonder if it’s that simple? † referring to the assignment. Now at Line 16, he was sure that â€Å"It is not easy to know what is true for you or me. † Hughes at this point now came with the â€Å"you† together with the â€Å"me.† With â€Å"I feel and see and hear, Harlem, I hear you:† â€Å"hear you, hear me – we two – you me, talk on this page† (Lines18-19) the student was not just writing about himself but of the whole African-American people. The sound of the assonance was strong like the clamor for equality. In Lines 21-26, the student cried out that he, in many ways, was like a white man with the same wants and aspira tions in life. Hughes’ metaphors for gifts like â€Å"pipe† to mean growing old, â€Å"Bessie† for Blues, â€Å"Bop† for Jazz, and â€Å"Bach† for the classical and Baroque music.The student wrote that the African-American also wanted the things the White man enjoyed. Hughes subtly presented the issue of racism by completely leaving out the assonance, instead, the student was introspective when he asked â€Å"So will my page be colored that I write? † (Line 27). Despite the absence of the assonance, Hughes was still able to convey what the student wanted – to experience life, like the Whites do, until he is old when he smokes his pipe and listen to good music. The professor and the student were a contrast from the start, with conflicts in between.Hughes found a common ground in Lines 31-33 â€Å"You are white — / yet part of me, as I am part of you. / That’s American. † He followed it up with Lines 37-38 â€Å"As I learn from you, I guess you learn from me –† Hughes tried to make his readers see that the equalizer comes in both their being Americans. Theme for English B gives a very light treatment, being a free verse, of a compelling issue such as racism. The readers are able to internalize the poem through its rhythm. The tone of the poem is reflective as it is assertive with the use of the poetic voice of â€Å"I† coming as it is from someone who has a personal stake on the issue.Hughes was excellent in the use of a page for a composition in an English B class, where the student would use black ink to write on a white sheet of writing paper. The symbolisms accurately portrayed the issue in the poem – that Blacks and Whites despite their difference should not be opposing colors of America. Using the Italian Past Perfect Subjunctive Tense

To complete the fourth of subjunctive-tense verb forms, theres the congiuntivo trapassato (referred to as the past perfect subjunctive in English), which is a compound tense. Form this tense with the congiuntivo imperfetto of the auxiliary verb avere or essere and the past participle of the acting verb. Forming the Compound Tense The compound tenses (i tempi composti) are verb tenses that consist of two words, such as the passato prossimo (present perfect). Both the verbs essere and avere act as helping verbs in compound tense formations. For example: io sono stato (I was) and ho avuto (I had). Auxiliary Verb Avere In general, transitive verbs (verbs that carry over an action from the subject to the direct object) are conjugated with avere as in the following example: Il pilota ha pilotato laeroplano. (The pilot flew the plane.) When the passato prossimo is constructed with avere, the past participle does not change according to gender or number: Io ho parlato con Giorgio ieri pomeriggio. (I spoke to George yesterday afternoon.)Noi abbiamo comprato molte cose. (We bought many things.) When the past participle of a verb conjugated with avere is preceded by the third person direct object pronouns lo, la, le, or li, the past participle agrees with the preceding direct object pronoun in gender and number. The past participle may agree with the direct object pronouns mi, ti, ci, and vi when these precede the verb, but the agreement is not mandatory. Ho bevuto la birra. (I drank the beer.)Lho bevuta.
